Ein neues Album nach sechs Jahren

Sechs Jahre ist es her, seit Woodstock, dem letzten Album von Portugal. The Man. Sechs Jahre und ein Track daraus – "Feel it Stil" läuft noch immer rauf und runter im Radio. Jetzt war es für die Band an der Zeit, wieder etwas Neues zu veröffentlichen. Dabei wurde es das ein oder andere Mal ziemlich emotional, erzählt Sänger John Gourley egoFM Moderator Max im Interview. Außerdem spricht er über seinen gebrochenen Kiefer und ob die Band nach "Feel it Still" großen Druck verspürt hat, nochmal so einen Riesenhit zu landen.

Album trotz Kieferbuch

Es ist viel passiert in den letzten sechs Jahren. Zum einen hat sich John seinen Kiefer gebrochen. Beziehungsweise, wie er dann gemerkt hat, ist er schon gebrochen, seitdem er ein Teenager ist. Durch das viele Singen hat er sich aber noch mehr abgenutzt. Daran gehindert, trotzdem neue Musik aufzunehmen, hat ihn das nicht. Wenn du allerdings ganz genau hinhörst, merkst du vielleicht, wie John manchmal "kieferschonender" singt.

"A year of it I could barely eat. I could barely speak. It was extremely, extremely painful. […] Honestly, as soon as I could sing again, I went in and started recording the new album. So I recorded songs like "Summer of luv" and "Plastic Island". Yeah, the verses of those songs. You can hear it. I'm singing through my teeth." – John Gourley

Außerdem hat die Band 2019 ihren guten Freund Chris Black verloren. Er war oft mit auf Tour unterwegs und so etwas wie ein Anker für die Gruppe. John erzählt, wie unfassbar lustig Chris war und wie wichtig er gleichzeitig für ihn war. Er hat ihm zum Beispiel die Nervosität auf der Bühne genommen.

"I have a lot of anxiety, so getting on stage, it's scary for me. I don't really feel super comfortable out there. And Chris would take all of that weight off of me by just taking that attention. […] And even in his passing, since he's passed, I found myself more comfortable on stage. Obviously without him there. Just realizing like 'oh he was showing me that. It's cool. Everything's cool.'" – John Gourley

Verständlich, dass die Band das neue Album nach ihm benannt hat. Chris Black Changed My Life. Seitdem sie es veröffentlicht haben, haben Portugal. The Man schon jede Menge Rückmeldung von Fans bekommen.

"I've loved this record coming out because kind of just organically, people have started sharing stories about people who have changed their lives, and it's been really, really sweet. We we made these like cards and stickers for everything that say '___ changed my life' and you can write in who changed your life. […] Just watching social media. Seeing people pop up and say, hey, Jeff changed my life and then Jeff pops into the comments and says, 'Oh my God, I had no idea.'" – John Gourley

Frances Changed My Life

Noch jemand, der Johns Leben verändert hat, ist seine Tochter Frances. Sie bekam ebenfalls in der Zeit zwischen den zwei Alben die Diagnose DHDDS, eine seltene Erkrankung des Nervensystem mit epileptischen Anfällen und Kontrollverlust über seine Emotionen. Die Behandlung dafür ist extrem teuer, weshalb die Band mehr Aufmerksamkeit dafür schaffen will:

"It's so high. I mean, I thought like, we're successful like we made it and we can't afford the treatments for our daughter. And it was just so heartbreaking seeing that and realizing there are so many of these families that go through this and we're trying to raise funds to further genetic research and further these genetic treatments and try and make it cheaper and more affordable for families in the future." – John Gourley

Die Musik einfach rauslassen

Kieferbruch, der Verlust eines Freundes und eine seltene Erkrankung in der Familie. Das alles verarbeitet die Band auf dem Album. Und klar, oft klingt die Musik typisch für Portugal. The Man trotzdem tanzbar. Bei genauerem Hinhören werden die Lyrics aber erst so richtig deutlich. Das passiert beim Songwriting oft automatisch, meint John.

"Yeah, I I'm a big believer in letting music just come out. Well, and see where it takes you, and then you apply meaning to it afterwards. […] It feels really personal. I am thinking a lot about people though. […] Autobiographical writing has never really appealed to me as much as observation and social issues." – John Gourley
