Im Interview spricht P-Thugg von Chromeo darüber, warum ihr neues Album 'Adult Contemporary' ihr erwachsenstes Album ist.
Seit knapp 20 Jahren bringen Chromeo aus Kanada den Funk
Quasi fast pünktlich zum Jubiläum erscheint sechs Jahre nach ihrem letzten nun ihr neues Album, Adult Contemporary. Im Interview mit egoFM Max berichtet P-Thugg von Chromeo über die Reise hin zu ihrem Signature Sound. Außerdem erzählt er, worüber er mit Dave 1, der anderen Hälfte von Chromeo, seit 30 Jahren jeden Tag spricht.

Der Signature Sound von Chromeo
Als sie anfingen, als Chromeo Musik zu machen, kannte sich das Duo bereits seit zehn Jahren. Weil die beiden auch schon in anderen Bands und auch zusammen Musik gemacht hatten, hat es erst mal eine Zeit gedauert, bis sie ihren eigenen Sound gefunden hatten.
"You know, we were just in the studio trying different things, different combinations, different ideas, different concepts because, you know, when you start a band and you start making music, you want to have your seal of approval. Your main aesthetic. How are people going to recognize your music?" – P-Thugg von Chromeo
Anstatt einfach den typischen Funk zu kopieren, wollten sie einen anderen Ansatz.
Bis der feststeht, dauert es natürlich. Obwohl seine Eltern eher französische und arabische Musik hören, kam P-Thugg irgendwann dann doch auf den Funk-Geschmack.
"But when we were in high school and we formed that bands, we started collecting records and discovering funk music. We would go on Saturdays and buy vintage records, you know, for $0.25 and discover music through. I listened to a lot of hip hop, was exposed to hip hop when I immigrated to Canada. Discovering funk music also reminded me of the samples that were in the hip hop that I was listening." – P-Thugg von Chromeo
Das erwachsenste Album?
Über die Jahrzehnte hat sich das Duo natürlich weiterentwickelt. Ist es passend zum Titel Adult Contemporary somit auch ihr erwachsenstes Album?
"Yes. In terms of lyrics, in terms of content, it's definitely the most adult, the most mature, let's say. But the music we kind of took back to our first two records, the energy of the music and the textures and the crafts that we put in, we kind of like went back to the basement." – P-Thugg
Feature mit La Roux
Die Aufnahmen für ihr Album haben Chromeo eigentlich sehr privat gehalten. Ein Feature hat es dann aber doch auf die Platte geschafft: Der Song "Replacements" mit keiner geringeren als La Roux. Die Energie und Stimme von Sängerin und Produzentin Elly Jackson haben sie begeistert. Irgendwas hatte ihnen bei den Aufnahmen gesagt, dass eben genau sie gut für diesen Song geeignet wäre.
"I just voiced it out and then they was like, you know what, let's just call her. We have. I haven't talked to her in five to six years or even more, and we just reached out and, you know, we've known each other for a long time. So she was excited and we sent her the song and she wrote her part and and recorded." – P-Thugg
